Why do we wear clothes?

Clothes are something humans have worn for a long time to provide a shield from extreme weather and provide protection against toxic or infectious materials. Eventually the practical use of clothing became mundane and people started to develop a sense of fashion. One of the first known fashion designers was Charles Fredrick Worth. Charles was known for using live Models to show off designs, essentially creating the idea of a “fashion show.” If Charles could see what fashion and clothing design has become today, I am sure he would be very proud.

There are 5 reasons why we wear clothing.

  1. Adornment: Added decoration or ornamentation.
  2. Protection: Clothing that provides physical safeguards to the body, preventing harm from climate and environment.
  3. Identification: Establishing who someone is or what they do.
  4. Modesty: Covering the body according to the code of decency established by society.
  5. Status: One’s position or rank in comparison to others.

Protection, identification, modesty, status…naah. Perhaps adornment?!

Eventually more people shared the dream of a well dressed world like Charles and eventually went on to disrupt the industry time and time again. Among the top fashion designers you have: Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, and Alexander McQueen. All of these historic names will most likely be remembered for a long time because of the contributions they have made to the world of fashion.

For a long time fashion has been a way for humans to display their wealth, age, gender, religion, etc. This outward display of oneself through clothes can paint a picture to people who have not met you. If you want to be taken serious, then you wear formal attire, or if you want to relax and have fun then you would wear shorts and a shirt. These simple fabrics with holes for your appendages have developed into an industry that provides billions of dollars a year for small and large clothing companies to make money off of.
